NSS College, Nilamel (Reaccredited with B++ Grade - CGPA 2.86 by NAAC)
NSS College, Nilamel, affiliated to the University of Kerala, is one of the aided Arts and Science colleges under the management of the Nair Service Society, founded by Bharatha Kesari Sri. Mannathu Padmanabhan. Ever since its inception in 1964, the college has been synonymous with excellence in academic activities and service to the community through extension activities, research and best practices. The college works with the vision of "Quality Education through Academic Excellence, Skill Development and Character Formation" and is committed to producing socially committed citizens. Situated on a lovely hummock spread across 34 acres by the side of the MC Road, not far from the historic Jatayu Rock at Chadayamangalam mentioned in the epic Ramayana, the college provides a quiet ambience for teaching and learning.
The college offers eleven Undergraduate Programmes in English, Malayalam, Economics, History, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry and Commerce, two Postgraduate Programmes in Malayalam and Commerce, and one Research Centre. In line with the University of Kerala norms, the college has successfully implemented the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) from the academic year 2024-25. The FYUGP offers multidisciplinary approach, skill enhancement courses, ability enhancement courses and multiple entry and exit options to ensure holistic development and employability of students.
The college regularly organizes a large number of seminars, workshops, invited talks, exhibitions and faculty development programmes. Departments conduct national and state-level seminars, hands-on training workshops, skill development sessions and career-oriented talks to enhance both academic knowledge and practical skills of students and faculty.
Research is given top priority. The PG Department of Malayalam is an approved Research Centre of the University of Kerala. Faculty members are actively engaged in research, with numerous publications in UGC CARE-listed journals, minor and major research projects, and Ph.D. guidance. Students are also encouraged to undertake research projects as part of FYUGP. To promote academic collaboration, skill development and placement, the college has signed MoUs with reputed academic institutions, research organizations, industries and governmental agencies. These MoUs facilitate internships, student exchange, joint research, on-the-job training and extension activities. The College Council assists the Principal in academic and administrative matters. All academic activities are planned by the Planning Board and monitored and evaluated by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The College Office, led by the Office Superintendent, looks after general administration. The PTA and Alumni Association provide strong support to the institution. Various statutory committees such as the Academic Committee, Research Committee, Discipline Committee, Purchase Committee, Grievance Redressal Cell and Anti-Ragging Cell work in unison for the welfare of students. The Career Guidance and Placement Cell, Women's Cell, ASAP, Walk With a Scholar (WWS) and Scholar Support Programme (SSP) equip students for future challenges. Membership in clubs like Community and Health Club, Nature and Eco Club, Science Club, Theatre Club, Literary Club and Environmental Club helps students showcase their talents. An automated well-stocked library with browsing facility, computer centre and fitness centre are the major attractions of the college. The college also runs innovative programmes like finishing School for the outgoing students. The Physical Education Department grooms sports teams and prepares them for University, State and National level competitions. In short, the college offers all facilities needed to serve the student community.
